Microscope Views of Bread Mold Spores
Bread Mold
Bread mold is a
kind of fungus that is commonly found on the
surface of bread. The mold takes food and
thebread and causes the surface of the bread
to change. The mold causes the bread to
taste bad. Mold acts as a decomposer that
can decompose decayed plants and
animals.Bread mold begins its lifecycle on
the bread surface as a wind blown spore.
With moisture and food from the bread, this
spore sprouts and grows hair like structures
on the bread surface. Once the mold reaches
a growth with paint brush like
structures, it starts producing more spores.
These spores are blown by wind and spread to
other bread surfaces.
There are many types, shapes and colors of bread molds. Penicillium molds are green and grey in color. |
The Experiment
We took four slices of
white bread and put each piece in a plastic
ziplock sandwich bag. We placed one in a dark desk
drawer, one on an open bookcase shelf, one in a
dark supply closet, and one on top of a bookcase
by a window. For 17 days the appearance of the
bread did not change. Then on the bread in the
dark desk and the bread in the dark supply closet
there was a small green spot. |
